Hamleys Gift Ideas
Hamleys is named after William Hamley, who
founded a toy shop called "Noah's Ark" at High Holborn in London in 1760. A branch in Regent Street was opened in 1881,but
the Holburn branch was destroyed by fire in 1901 and was relocated from 231
to 86–87 High Holborn. The business has survived in various forms to the present
day, and at one time was the largest toy shop in the world. Hamleys moved to
its current Regent Street premises in 1981. In fact Hamleys was there 11 years
before Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus at the end of Regents Street.
So great had the shop's reputation become
by the end of Queen Vicoria's reign, that Jean Jaques and Sons asked if they
could launch their new 'Gossima' exclusively through Hamleys. The public immediately
took to the game which they christened 'ping pong' after the noise made by
the bouncing of its hollow white celluloid ball. Not until 1921 did it officially
become Table Tennis. Not many people know that!
Even being bombed five times in the blitz
did not stop Hamleys. The staff wearing tin hats served at the front door,
rushing in to collect the toys, and hand them over at the door. After the War
it was business as usual; the Festival of Britain in 1951 brought a Grand Doll’s
Salon as well as a vast model railway to hypnotise children of any age.

The Ship The armoured warship Admiral Graf Spee went into service on the 6th of January 1936, as the new flagship of the German navy. On 13th December 1939, at the mouth of the River Plate, the Graf Spee ran into a British cruiser squadron. The Graf Spee was able to break out of the battle that followed to her own advantage, but had to make a run for the neutral harbour of Montevideo in order to repair the damage. On the 17th of December, after makeshift repairs, Captain Langsdorff had to leave the harbour. He subsequently scuttled his own ship. Public attention was recently focussed on the wreck of the Admiral Graf Spee again, when it became known that Uruguayan contractors wished to raise a major part of the ship. The Aircraft The PT 117 belonged to the smallest, fastest and most manoeuvrable combat vessels of the US Marine Cops. The patrol torpedo boats were also known as mosquitoes because they stung the enemy at high speed. Four 2500hp heavy-duty supercharged engines (12 cyl. Packard) gave the boat a maximum speed of 50 knots. In addition, these boats featured specially designed hulls (50t displacement) allowing the boats to glide over the water. Fitted with 4 torpedoes, 4 MGs and an anti-aircraft gun, they were a serious threat to the enemy especially in the restricted island waters of the Pacific. The carrier-borne Fairey Gannet, designed for anti-submarine duty, made its first flight in 1949 and was the first aircraft in the world to fly with a coupled jet turbine power unit with counter-rotating propeller. It was also the first turbo-prop aircraft that could land on an aircraft carrier and the first aircraft of the British Fleet Air Arm capable of both combat and search operations. The Gannet AS went into service with the FAA in January 1955 and was stationed on aircraft carriers. The Droid Tri-Fighter During the Battle over Coruscant, the political power centre of the galaxy, this agile Tri-Fighter was used by the separatists. In flight, the central enclosure of the pilot remains in one position while the outer section with its three outriggers rotates round this centre. The most devastating weapon carried by the Tri-Fighter is the missile with the buzz droids. When one of the missiles meets its target, it releases these treacherous droids that attach themselves to the outside of the Starfighter and immediately begin to damage the vessels systems or R2s. Once these little droids have been released it is almost impossible to get rid of them. Instead of a crew, the control centre contains only a droid computer that operates the three light laser cannon in seconds. In the Battle over Coruscant, the Droid Tri-Fighters prove to be a serious opponent. They appear to be innumerable and a victory for the Republic is by no means a foregone conclusion.
