Hamleys is named after William Hamley, who founded a toy shop called "Noah's Ark" at High Holborn in London in 1760. A branch in Regent Street was opened in 1881,but the Holburn branch was destroyed by fire in 1901 and was relocated from 231 to 86–87 High Holborn. The business has survived in various forms to the present day, and at one time was the largest toy shop in the world. Hamleys moved to its current Regent Street premises in 1981. In fact Hamleys was there 11 years before Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus at the end of Regents Street.

So great had the shop's reputation become by the end of Queen Vicoria's reign, that Jean Jaques and Sons asked if they could launch their new 'Gossima' exclusively through Hamleys. The public immediately took to the game which they christened 'ping pong' after the noise made by the bouncing of its hollow white celluloid ball. Not until 1921 did it officially become Table Tennis. Not many people know that!

Even being bombed five times in the blitz did not stop Hamleys. The staff wearing tin hats served at the front door, rushing in to collect the toys, and hand them over at the door. After the War it was business as usual; the Festival of Britain in 1951 brought a Grand Doll’s Salon as well as a vast model railway to hypnotise children of any age.

Battleship Bismarck Model Kit The Bismarck, at 42,343 tons was, for her time, the largest and most up-to-date battleship in the world (next to the Hood). Launched on 14th February 1940, at the Blohm and Voss shipyard, Hamburg, together with the similar Tirpitz she was the most up-to-date and prestigious ship of the German navy. With a length of 251 m, the top of the mast stood 52 m above the surface of the sea. She was protected by a total of 17,450 tonnes of steel armour plating. The newly designed heavy artillery fired 800 kg projectiles up to a range of 34.2 km and was capable of penetrating 350 mm armour at 21 km. On 24th May 1941, the Bismarck, in a sea battle together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, at the pack ice frontier of Greenland, sank the largest British battle cruiser, the Hood, with a direct hit by the 5th salvo from her 380 mm guns. Although the Prinz Eugen suffered no direct hits in the battle of 24th May, the Bismarck, which was damaged in the bow, made for a French harbour. In the subsequent pursuit by British ships and aircrafts, on 27th May a torpedo hit the rudder and after being hit by the superior numbers of the Home Fleet, she was disabled and sunk in the Atlantic about 800 km off the French coast. US Navy Gato Class Submarine Model 1:72 05047 After the US Pacific fleet had been seriously weakened at Pearl Harbor, at the beginning of the war in the Pacific, much of the responsibility in the battle against the Japanese expeditionary forces rested on the shoulders of the American submariners. The submarines of the Gato Class were large fleet submarines that had been specially developed for use in the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean. Due to their size and equipment, they could remain in non-stop service for 75 days. Between 1940 and 1944, 77 Gatos were built at four different shipyards. Together with the Balao and the Trench Class, they formed the backbone of the US submarine fleet. Most of these subs went to the Pacific, but a few were also used in the Atlantic. These submarines were extremely successful. Not only did they sink a large number of irreplaceable freighters and tankers, but they also decimated the Imperial naval fleet. The most grievous losses were the aircraft carriers Shokaku, Taiyo, Unyo and Taiho. Developed for use in the expanses of the Pacific, the Gato was much larger than for example the German type VII submarine. It had a length of 95 m, a beam of 8.20 m and a draught of 4.60 m. Its displacement was 1825 tons surfaced and 2410 tons dived. The diesel engine gave it a speed of 20.75 knots on the surface.
